New is great, but old certainly has its charms

This set of photos (from How to Be a Retronaut, itself a great source of retrobilia) was taken by Stanley Kubrick in 1949 for a Look magazine story entitled “Chicago: City of Contrasts.” Though he was still four years away from directing his first feature film, several of these shots look like they could be movie stills. This video juxtaposes what appears to be Super 8 film of a 1977 visit to the Hancock Tower with shot-by-shot video recreations from 2011. Though only 34 years have passed, it’s pretty impressive how much more there is to the city today.
